J. J. Brookings & Company was formed in November, 1970 in San Jose, California. For our first thirteen years, we were private dealers, specializing in fine, museum quality, contemporary works on paper by nationally and internationally known artists. We always had a good selection of important American artists such as Robert Motherwell, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Richard Diebenkorn and Alexander Calder to name a very few. And on the international side, we carried works by Pablo Picasso, Johnny Friedlander and Joan Miro. To a lesser extent, we carried slightly earlier works by Thomas Hart Benton, Paul Landacre, Jacques Villon and other figurative and landscape artists of the early to mid 20th century period.
Being eclectic by nature, and with the value of fine photography becoming unreachable by many of our collectors, we began exhibiting some fine vintage posters in our gallery along side our other well known and highly collectable artists. The reception of these fine vintage posters was so enthusiastic that we had our first exclusively poster show in 2001 and another in 2002. At the present time, we have a inventory of well over 500 pieces.
International Poster Gallery
We now feature nearly 3.500 antique posters on-line with thumbnails, priced from $50 to more than $10,000. Acquired from around the globe, our lithographic posters and advertising collectibles will beautify the home or office and please the discerning collector and museum curator as well.
Contemporary Posters
Our company, Contemporary Posters, was formed to introduce, establish and offer for sale in the U.S. original contemporary/vintage graphic design art posters. In Europe and Asia, contemporary/vintage graphic design art posters - like paintings, sculptures, art prints & photographs - long have been recognized, exhibited, bought & collected as art.
A contemporary/vintage poster is an image created after World War II while an antique/vintage poster is an image created from c.1890's (La Belle Époque) through WWII. All graphic design posters are works of art that attract a passerby's attention to dramatically communicate a message - informing, announcing or advertising a product, event or idea they combine words with type, illustration or photography.
During the period from the end of World War ll (1945) until the fall of Communism in 1989, the Polish School of Posters became recognized as the best in contemporary/vintage poster art. Its artists created renowned theater, music, film & CYRK (circus) posters. Since CYRK posters are considered the quintessential posters of the golden age of the Polish School of Posters, Contemporary Posters decided to focus almost exclusively on CYRK... Polish circus/art posters.
Galerie Stylo
The only gallery in the Netherlands almost entirely devoted to original vintage posters. The collection contains works by the leading graphic artsts: Alphonse Mucha, Ludwig Hohlwein, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Leonetto Cappiello, Kees van Dongen to name just a few. Next to the posters there are many books and periodicals (Das Plakat, Arts et Metiers Graphiques) as well as prints.

MOVIE POSTER SERVICE is the oldest and largest collection of movie posters in the world.
In 1926, in a theater in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Bob Smith,as a teenager, started saving the posters from the theater he swept. Later, he opened the first independent poster exchange in the nation, and began serving theaters in many areas around the world. During that time, eleven independent exchanges were in operation. As the years passed, most closed or sold. In 1973, Bob decided to retire and sold Theater Poster Service to his then son-in-law, Cleophas Wooley. Cleophas changed the name to MOVIE POSTER SERVICE, and continued to serve theaters for many years.

Viewing of posters is possible for a few weeks preceding each auction.
